Recently featured on That Racing Channel on YouTube, Josh's second gen MR2 is an incredible example of what this platform is truly capable of. Swapping out the original 2.0L turbo Toyota engine for a fully built Honda K20 with a big Precision 7275 Turbo, the MR2 is now making an insane 1100HP at the rear wheels. This is the second time the car was featured on the channel, last time having "only" 800-HP, and now with it's new modifications Josh was eager to show what it can do.
The little Toyota has now been widened in the rear to fit massive 15x10 inch Mickey Thompson tires. The boost in power comes from a bunch of different changes, including a larger 6in intercooler, bigger turbo, high performance Drag Cartel cams, and a fully built JBR Engines shortblock.
Josh's MR2 is a manual trans car, which as almost every enthusiast will agree, is the better option as far as total driving experience and most motorsports. However, from a drag racing standpoint, manuals put the driver at a disadvantage. Manual cars are harder to launch off the line, cant be shifted as fast, and also tend to break more components compared to most performance built automatics.
So to help compensate for that, Josh's MR2 also has quite a bit of tech to help put power down and get down the track as fast as possible. The AEM ECU has an option for setting up traction control, which Josh has on a switch so he can also do burnouts. He also has no-lift shift technology fitted through the use of a Strain Gauge which tells ECU when he is shifting and cuts ignition to allow for a smooth fast shift without having to use the clutch.
