Imported during the era of Japan's economic bubble, the 2nd generation is the representative model of this "returning expatriate car". Like the original production, it is a specialty car using the Galant chassis. As with the original production, it was built by Chrysler and Mitsubishi through their DSM (Diamond Star Motors, later MMMA) joint venture.
In North America, a substantial share of the market for stylish compact coupes is comprised of women. The 2nd generation Eclipse was geared for that market, emphasizing its ease of ride and friendliness.
